Bergrestaurant Allmend
This restaurant is a request stop on the Wengernalpbahn, where the train pauses only if someone raises a hand.
Allmend sits at 1,509 metres, the last stop above Wengen before the line climbs on toward Wengernalp and Kleine Scheidegg. It is a request stop: the Wengernalpbahn only halts here if a passenger signals from the platform. That detail alone sets the pace.
The mountain restaurant beside the tracks looks out over the Lauterbrunnen valley, with the Jungfrau massif filling the opposite ridge. The kitchen serves regional cooking, fondue and raclette among it, made with ingredients sourced close to home. In winter, the terrace sits directly on the slope, near the start of the slalom section of the Lauberhorn World Cup course, skiers passing within view of the tables. In summer, the same ground turns to alpine meadow, and the walk down to Wengen takes less than an hour.
Most visitors ride through without stopping. Getting off here, even briefly, changes the valley from something seen through glass to something stood in.
