Stoos sits at 1,300 metres in the canton of Schwyz, reached only by funicular or cable car. No road leads here; a narrow lane exists but only permit holders may use it. The Stoosbahn, opened in 2017, climbs from the valley station near Schwyz on a gradient that reaches 110 percent, the steepest funicular railway in the world. Its four spherical cabins rotate as they rise, keeping the horizon steady while the valley drops away beneath the floor.

What makes Stoos slow travel perfect
The village holds barely a hundred residents. Chalets gather around a small square, with the Fronalpstock and Klingenstock chairlifts departing from its edges, carrying walkers toward the Stoos ridge and its view over ten lakes. Winters bring sledges and skis. Summers return the silence, broken only by cowbells and the occasional creak of a chairlift cable.
