Five Lakes Walk
Five lakes, five colours, one mountain that keeps showing up in all of them.
The trail runs from Blauherd to Sunnegga, roughly 9.8 kilometres past five lakes that share little beyond their altitude. Stellisee comes first, close to the Fluhalp mountain restaurant, its surface flat enough on a windless morning to double the Matterhorn above it. Grindjisee follows, darker and half-wild, its banks home to flowers rare enough that hikers are asked to stay on the path. At Grünsee, stone pines cling to sand and boulders in a landscape that looks more scoured than scenic, though swimming is allowed here when conditions permit.
Moosjisee, a small reservoir with water the colour of pale jade, comes next, then Leisee, where the walk ends and the crowds return: a lake built for families, with a shallow shoreline and a view back toward Sunnegga station. From here the funicular runs back down to Zermatt in 4.5 minutes, or the walk continues on foot, roughly an extra 90 minutes downhill through the larch forest above Findeln.
