Sunnegga
The locals' mountain. Less crowded, more authentic, same stunning view.
Sunnegga sits at 2,288 metres above Zermatt, reached by a funicular that runs entirely inside the mountain, the first of its kind built in Switzerland. The ride takes four and a half minutes and climbs over 650 metres without a single window of daylight until the doors open onto the Matterhorn.
The name comes from Valais dialect for sunny nook, earned because the slope catches light long after the valley floor is still in shadow. Marmots live in the rocks nearby and can often be watched from a short footpath in early morning or evening. The Leisee, a small lake just below the station, holds swimmers in summer and reflects the peaks around it: Obergabelhorn, Zinalrothorn, Weisshorn, with the Findel Glacier below the Rimpfischhorn.
From here, gondola and cable car connect to Blauherd and the Rothorn, starting points for the Five Lakes Walk, the Marmot Trail, the Flower Trail and the Freedom trail.
