Swissminiatur

All of Switzerland in miniature. Delightfully odd and somehow moving.

Swissminiatur opened in Melide in 1959, on the shore of Lake Lugano, and remains the only park of its kind in Switzerland. Across 14,000 square metres, more than 120 models stand at a scale of 1:25: the Château de Chillon, the Bundeshaus in Bern, the Heidi village of Maienfeld, Milan's cathedral, the only model open to visitors from the inside. Between them run 3,560 metres of miniature track, carrying eighteen trains past stations, bridges and level crossings, echoing the real railway lines a few hundred metres away.

The park rewards slow attention rather than speed. Details reveal themselves gradually: the pitch of a chalet roof, the proportions of a cable car station, a whole country's architecture laid out for comparison in a single afternoon. Monte San Salvatore rises behind the park, at true scale, as a reminder of what all this miniature work is standing in for.
