Diavolezza
Ride to 2,978 metres and glaciers close in from every side.
The cable car from Val Bernina climbs 882 metres in seven minutes, and the valley falls away as the glaciers come into view. At 2,978 metres, the mountain station opens onto the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers, with Piz Bernina, the only peak above 4,000 metres in the Eastern Alps, rising opposite.
Morteratsch has retreated some three kilometres since measurements began in 1878, and the ice caves near its snout collapse a little further each summer. What is visible today will look different within a decade.
Berghaus Diavolezza sits on the ridge with a panoramic terrace and an outdoor jacuzzi that runs at 41 degrees. From here, the Glacier Experience Trail loops for about ninety minutes across glacial grinds and moraines, with information stations explaining what the ice has shaped.
The valley station connects directly to the Bernina Line. Arrive by train, ride up, and see it while it still holds its shape.
