The Aare Gorge cuts through limestone between Meiringen and Innertkirchen, 1.4 kilometres long and up to 200 metres deep. At its narrowest point the walls close to barely a metre apart.
Wooden walkways and short tunnels, bolted into the rock face over a century ago, trace the river through galleries where daylight barely reaches. The Aare glacier shaped this passage over thousands of years, and the water inside still runs the pale blue-grey of glacial melt. Walking through takes about 45 minutes, from the west entrance in Meiringen to the east one in Innertkirchen. The Meiringen–Innertkirchen railway runs parallel to the gorge and carries walkers back to their starting point in a few minutes.
On summer evenings, the gorge stays open past dusk, lit from within its own walls.
