High above the lake, the air smells of hay and quiet water.
Stanserhorn
The mountain opens its roof once the wind takes over.
The journey starts in wood before it moves into openness. A funicular built in 1893 climbs from Stans through pastures and past level crossings, its open wooden coaches creaking the way they have for over a century, reaching the middle station at Kälti in ten minutes.
There, passengers cross into the CabriO, the world's first cable car with a roofless upper deck. A spiral staircase leads to the top level, where the wind arrives directly and the four support masts pass close overhead. The mountain station sits at 1,850 metres, a short walk below the true summit at 1,898. Ten lakes and a hundred kilometres of Alpine ridgeline open from the revolving restaurant, which completes one turn in 43 minutes.
Rangers patrol the summit trail, ready to name a flower or a distant peak on request.

The lake shrinks to a ribbon of light before the gondola even reaches the top.
Hammocks strung above the water, and a sky over Pilatus that turns gold before the last boat leaves.
